Lecture4 Immersion Education

 Immersion Education

Immersion Education is the process of immersing oneself in a language environment so intimately that the language is compared to a liquid. It is one of the learning methods that started in Canada in the 1960s and is now spreading all over the world, including Japan. Immersion education is a method of education in which a foreign language is not used as a subject, but as a means to learn other subjects, and in immersion schools, the target language is used both in and out of class. Trainers and consultants introduce various schemes and techniques to enable every teacher to bring a language focus into their classroom.

3 principles

- Comprehensible input

- Structured and extended output

- Focus on form:

Lecture3 Working memory

 Working Memory

Working memory differs in that it is an active and goal-oriented temporary memory that is involved in both retention and processing, whereas short-term memory is a passive temporary memory that focuses only on the function of retention. In addition, the dynamic nature of working memory differs from that of short-term memory in that it updates and adjusts information. Alan Baddeley, is a British psychologist. He is known for his research on memory and for developing the three-component model of working memory. is a professor of psychology at the University of York.

Multi-component model of working memory, in this model, three subsystems called the phonological loop, visuospatial sketchpad, and episodic buffer are assumed to work together under the central executive function that controls attention.

The phonological loop, visuospatial sketchpad and episodic buffer are assumed to work in a coordinated manner under the phonological loop function. The phonological loop stores audio information and repeats the content aloud in the mind to refresh memory traces and prevent their destruction.

subvocal rehearsal

The visuospatial sketchpad also stores visual and spatial information. It can be divided into visual and spatial systems.

●The episodic buffer holds an integrated representation of audio/visual/spatial information, and is also responsible for accessing and integrating long-term memory information. They are called episodic because they are considered to integrate episodically related information. The episodic buffer is similar to episodic memory, which is part of long-term memory, but differs in that it is a short-term memory.

Repetition is key!

Lecture 2 English Education CLT

Communicative Language Teaching

Communicative Language Teaching (CLT) is holistic. It focuses on all the skills and knowledge needed to communicate. As the structuring becomes more and more sophisticated, the activities become more fun and more challenging. These activities are very important in the early stages of language acquisition and are useful for later activities as well. However, care must be taken not to make them too suffering for the students as they increase in difficulty. Teachers need to think about the extent to which they will allow students to make errors.

Intermediate and advanced learners can use more structured exercises to increase their language repertoire. Flexibility of expression can be improved by avoiding the use of limited vocabulary and language patterns.

The problems with CLT are that teachers think they should mainly teach grammar, they do not know the real meaning of CLT, and they lack the skills to teach communication. There is no provision in the current CLT methodology for advanced proficiency in the use of language through repeated practice.

英語教育講義1104

I was grad to be able to hear some ways of effective study English of some students!I was able to hear a lot of interesting introductions because everyone has different personalities, strengths, and weaknesses.

I impressed studying way like reading foreign books every night before going to bed, and writing a diary in English every day. Also, I interested in the study materials using radio broadcast and NHK's program. Actually, I used to watch NHK's Korean language program (more than half of it was recorded and I haven't seen it yet:).

I introduced how I am learning English in today's class, I feel like I just said something stupid.😂

Anyway, I'm looking forward to other students' introduction!!🙋

英語教育講義1028

In today's class, we learned about four pilars of the foreign language learning.

#Meaning-focused input

#Meaning-focused output

#Language-focused learning

#Fluency development

I think the balanced learning with these methods work in theory, but quite difficult in practical. It's very ideal way.🤔💭

I learned that no matter what learning method we use, we should have some background knowledge to study a foreign language efficiently.

In the next class,  I have to talk about my recommended study method...

英語教育講義1021

At the beginning of the class, we learned about learner factors and what kind of influence they have on learning. It is true that one's personality and temperament may affect one's learning, but it would be a shame to get depressed and set one's own learning limit. I felt it is important to find a learning method that suits each of us.

Certainly, even my middle and high school classmates with a good vocabulary, good grammar, and high English test scores did not speak English fluently. Even though I able to understand easy English with the vocabulary and grammar I had learned so far, I can't immediately express my thoughts and ideas in English. I was in a hurry to speak in English when I suddenly had to, so I couldn't even follow simple grammar and spoke a bunch of words in English. It is clear that the number of training and practice in speaking is far less than that in vocabulary, reading and listening.

The most interesting thing I found was about children and second language learning. It's not enough to just have your child listen to English, it's not just that they will learn to use English just because they go to a language school, it's that they will feel stressed out by having to speak English, and they will feel even more burdened by their parents telling them to use English at home. If you try to expose your child to English in a reckless manner, there is a chance that it will cause trauma to the English language itself. These are things that any parent who wants their child to learn English is likely to do. It is clear that just because children are flexible does not mean that we can just give them everything, but that we need to carefully balance their minds when it comes to language learning.

英語教育講義1014

There must be so many different cultures and rules in the world because culture shock can happen even between Japanese people. The important thing is to understand and respect those cultures, and not to criticize or dislike them just because they are different from my way of thinking. Valentine's Day, Christmas, Halloween, etc. all came from overseas and the Japanese people enjoy it by changing it to fit their own style. That is great way to enjoy different cultures. My ALT teacher told me a lot of interesting stories about cultural differences and that's how I got interested in foreign country.

I'd love to do a seriously scary Halloween one day!

英語教育講義1007

Our team took a look at how we kept ourselves motivated to study and shared each the way each person have taken. I found that if we only had one goal, we would be satisfied with our achievement and would not be able to carry ourselves to the next step. There is no one answer and there are different methods that are better suited to each individual, so it's important to find that and never stop practicing.  That said, actually, it's not easy to keep going... I also thought about how I could motivate my students if I were in a position to teach English and what I could do to achieve it.

TOO OLD TO ROCK AND ROLL

Too Old to Rock 'n' Roll:
Too Young to ???

Greg's father has been living like a dead man since his wife died in an accident. He wasn't that old, but his bangs were thinning and he didn't pay attention to his clothes and his appearance was getting older. Their neighbor Valerie, who cares about them, encouraged them, and thanks to that, Greg's father gets smile and getting better day after day, and Valerie and Greg's father seem to be in a good mood, but...

I thought it was going to be a funny comedy, but it didn't end very nicely. Despite his son's concerns, I felt that the father's heart was still young. It may say roughly like "Too Old to Rock 'n' Roll: Too Young to stop playing!"

DEAD MAN'S ISLAND

 I thought it's a horror story, but it's a mystery.

After the death of their father in a tragic accident, Carol and her mother are looking for a new job to start their lives over. Her mother is hired as a secretary and Carol as a farmer, but they are taken to an island where is forbidden tourists visiting. The man who hired them is acting suspiciously and is apparently hiding something. What is the secret hidden on the island?

뷰티 인사이드/The Beauty Inside

"Am I the same today as  I was yesterday?"

This is the story of a man who suddenly woke up one day and became a different person.
The main character of this story got a disease that changed his appearance, voice, gender and race every time he woke up. One day he wakes up as an old man, another day as a child, another day as a Japanese and speaks Japanese, another day as an American and speaks English. He may look different, but his mind is still him. One day he falls in love with a woman. But he can't get close to her because every day he wakes up and his appearance changes.
If I had the same disease as he does, I would give up on falling in love. I think nobody would accept me. Who would love me like this, I think. In fact, the main character was also suffering. But when the woman learns about the hero's illness and accepts it, her line is, "Am I the same today as I was yesterday?"It is true that we don't change our appearance every day like the main character, but we live a different self than we did yesterday. We never repeat the same day. This movie taught me about the importance of caring for people and love.

Sherlock Holmes short stories

I still thought Sherlock Holmes was smart. There are lots of clues in the story, but I couldn't solve the mystery. And characters like Watson and Irene Adler are very engaging. Irene Adler, in particular, is as smart as Sherlock, and she can see what he's up to in an instant. I found her very attractive as the same woman. I'm always amazed at the amount of knowledge Sherlock Holmes has.He listens and solves any client's problem. This time I read a short story; there were only three stories and I wanted to read more. I've heard that Baker Street actually exists and I'd love to visit it.

TEAM KADOWAKI's Long Book Review②

The book’s contents based on true story. The main character Karen Silkwood was Union activist. In the book,  the story from the beginning of the activity to the mysterious death. She looked beautiful and smart. She started to work had the Cimarron plutonium plant. She thought there are a lot of danger for worker. She tried to change the working environment.

The story made into a movie, so I was ease to imagine scenes as a  Artistic Adventurer. At first, she founded new job with high salary and saw new friends and good boyfriend. They looked happy. However I associated miserable situation that one pretty and happy woman becoming exhausted while continuing the book. The book’s name is “THE DEATH OF KAREN SILKWOOD”. At that point I imagined a lot of image of story. Also I read the book of understanding she would dead. So I thought “Why she would dead?”or “How does she die?”. I could guess several stories.

I made power point about the book’s story. I wanted my team’s members to understand the story more specifically.

Since it's a true story, as a connector I searched more about her real life case. And then I edited it into a newspaper article and put it together.

Unlike the previous book, the book “The Death of Karen Silkwood was a little difficult for me to summarize. But the more I read, the more I can understand the content. I summarized it by myself and I introduced in 2nd Literature Circle, everyone listen to my introduction. And my team members showed me own materials, they were very interesting and persuasive. Thanks to my team members, I could have a good time. As I mentioned by text message, during previous Literature Circle, my phone battery was dying, so I will charge my phone enough next time.

Also, as a character person, I focused on the main character and asked other members about her opinion. It was very interesting because everyone had different ideas. Also, I did character quiz after we finish discussion. We all enjoyed and could remember story through this quiz. As a discussion leader, i enjoyed discussion because other member’s ideas were very helpful. I’m thankful for my member!

As a wordmeister, I wanted everyone to expand their vocabulary, so I created a quiz to collect words that everyone on the team didn't understand. Everyone enjoyed it. I think they had fun while learning.

Overall, we did better than last time. It takes some getting used to, but I think the key to our success this time was good preparation.

I thank Sawa, Kaori, and Misaki for their contributions to this review.

The Death of Karen Silkwood

I read "The Death of Karen Silkwood".

I was very interested to learn that it was a true story that was made into a movie starring Meryl Streep.

She bravely took a stand to right an injustice. It was very cool to see her risking her life to gather evidence and expose the wrongdoings of a large corporation.

But she died. By a tragic accident. Was it an accident? I don't think so.
There was some great force that got in her way and made her die.

I'm sure she was aware of the risk, and yet she would still investigate to expose the injustice. She is a very respectful woman.

TEAM KADOWAKI's Long Book Revie

When we read "The Piano", we thought this was a story that could actually be true. The hero is fascinated by the piano, but he has to work though he is young because he is poor. One day he finds an old piano in the garage and is fascinated by the piano. He has an amazing talent for the piano. Some adults see this and try to get the poor boy to take piano lessons. Thanks to them, he was able to become a great pianist.
When I read the book, I came to play the piano. Even if someone doesn’t have money enough to live, he must not give up living. Those who are like the main character of the book may have a gift which we couldn’t find easily. I think I don’t have a gift for music, but I am full of curiosity, and I am willing to do anything. So everyone should do anything, if they have curiosity. The main character of the book works well and practices the piano hard and won the competition. I thought the effort is repaid, and everyone should make an effort.
Next, I tried to put myself in the hero's shoes and considered. The following is a statement I wrote the main character.  ―I’d been looking for what I really wanted to do. All of my friends worked at shops or factories. For me, those were worst things. But what I can do to make the money? But I found my job. That was farming. I like country. I like Mr and Mrs Wood and their daughter Linda. I worked so hard to make the money. I had only this choice but I liked it, until that day I found the piano in Mr Wood’s building. When I sat front of the piano, something came on to my mind and I felt something special. I didn’t know how to explain it. I think this was the turning point of my life. Until now, I chose my life by process of elimination. I liked working at the farm more than factories and shops. But now, I realized that the piano is what I really want to do. Playing the piano makes me happy. That is why I was obsessed with my work of the piano. What do you think if I didn’t meet the piano at that time? Or if I didn’t try to practice?― Did I understand him a little better?
Of course, the hero is very fascinating, but I was also particularly moved by the adults around him. They worked to develop the poor boy's outstanding talent somehow. They were all short of money, but each of them did what they could to help the boy. His talent wasn't nipped in the bud, but was nurtured by the adults around him and by himself. No one gave up on him. If everyone else had given up, he would have been a farmer all his life. It's as if he didn't have a talent for the piano.
I thought this is true in today's world as well. There are so many children in the world today who want to learn but can't, or who have the ability but don't have the space or money to develop it. Every child has a gift. And we need to know what policies are in place now to nurture them and how we can move forward. I thought we should think about what things are missing and what systems and policies are needed for children's future, so I looked into the recent buzz about Corona virus and students in the view of society.
Students who are no longer able to work part-time due to Corona virus pandemic are struggling to live and pay for school. In Japan as well, there are students who have been forced to drop out of school because they were unable to work part-time and pay their tuition fees due to Corona virus, I heard in the news that there is.  I researched what the government and the country are doing to support students, not only in Japan but also in other countries. I found out that the support is not enough. Things what we can't expect is, can't predict the governments neither. The government and the country were confused, just as we were confused by the sudden spread of the corona virus. Governments had to make policies and support in hurry, but of course the politics and supports were not enough. I am able to attend college thanks to my parents, but in a world where anything can happen, this issue could not be said to be irrelevant to me. I want to think about it more.

I thank Sawa, Kaori, and Misaki for their contributions to this review.

GATTACA

I got the better end of the deal. I only lent you my body. You lent me your dream.

A world where everything is determined by genes. You are worthy of your existence, your future dreams and your job. The story of a world where personality, disease, cause of death and life expectancy are known in three seconds after birth.

The man who dreams of becoming an astronaut, was born without genetic engineering, which left him physically weak and socially unappreciated. He doesn't have the genes to be an astronaut, and for him, being an astronaut was an impossible dream. One black market deal changes his life. He met a man with amazing physical abilities and strong genes. The man had lost the freedom of his lower body due to in a car accident.

I was mesmerized by the beauty of Uma Thurman.

Each character is conflicted inside, troubled and envious of others. Their struggles are also a highlight. I was also struck by the beauty of the scenes. There is something fantastical and dreamy and ephemeral about it.

A Quiet Place

If they hear you,
they hunt you.

If you make a sound, you die, that's the story of the world. It's a series of very tense scenes, and the main character's family is very impressive as they live their lives without making a sound. The sounds of talking, walking, eating food, and everything else are deadly. The most memorable scene for me was the one where the father and the child scream with all their might near the waterfall. The child is frightened at first, but finds that the sound of the waterfall cancels out their voices and they scream together. I sensed how happy that made them, who normally can't scream out loud, happy. The scene where the pregnunt mother is in the bathtub.... is also memorable. Her play was amazing. Strangely enough, I spent a lot of time after watching this movie not making a sound either. And I understood how difficult it was. The influence of movies is amazing.

Sister Act 2

If you want to be somebody, if you want to go somewhere, you'd better wake up and pay attention.

Soon after watching Sister Act, I wanted to see Sister Act 2 as well, so I went to the video rental store.

I knew the sisters were the best!

This time, Sister Mary Clarence change the delinquent boys and girls with her humor and songs. She's going to have a lot of problems, but she's going to be the kind of woman who builds trust with her students.

The sisters' songs were great, of course, but the students' songs were great.

I was very impressed with the way the kids, who weren't really into it at first, took the songs seriously. It was very encouraging to see everyone singing their hearts out and being themselves at the competition.

The movie in this series give me courage, dreams, and laughter, and I'm sure they do for you too.

Sister Act

No Sex.
No Booze.
No Men.
No Way.
This is the first time to see this movie. This is one of the famous movies in the world. I have watched "Ghost", so I knew Whoopi Goldberg. Her play is so powerful and all the characters that she acted were nice. This is a comedy movie about a woman so her boyfriend try to kill her that she become a sister to hide from him for saving her own life. At first, she hated church and she hesitated to pretend a sister, so she didn't use to spending daily life as a sister. One day, she is appointed a director of choir that was a turning point for her. I was impressed their chorus. They enjoy singing and change many things. I like "Hail Holy Queen" the best of all songs in this movie. If you have never watched this movie, please chack it out and listen amazing songs!

The Piano

The story of hero is a poor boy. He didn’t like study but the music class when he was a student. Perhaps he liked listening to the sound of the piano rather than singing. After graduate the school, he worked in a farmhouse for earning money. One day, he found the old piano in garage. I think this is a inevitable destiny for him. Gods gave him a talent. The poor boy who loves the piano and is loved by the piano, he continued to practice the piano everyday . Everyone people around the boy cheers him up. I was moved by the kindness of them. As growing up, we quit to have a grant dreams and give up many things easily. Actually, The fear that occurs when I try to something new is bigger as I grow up. However, in this story, everyone does whatever they can for this poor talented boy, I was very impressed.

The red shoes

Maybe I have read this story, but I only remember the heroine's legs are cut down, so I read it again. This story's heroine named Karen. At first, she was very poor, but thanks to her red shoes, she was able to be adopted by a rich old woman. After then, her obsession for the red shoes got harder. I can't understand her because the red shoes are more important than adoptive mother's life for Karen. I don't know what to say. Maybe her past influenced her obsession for the red shoes. I think this story tells us that don't be arrogant and even if you make a mistake in the past, if you reflect on it and apologize, you can get God's forgiveness.

Life

This is a panic horror movie. A team of scientists found a new life Beyond Earth in outer space. At first, everyone loved the creature, but suddenly it came to attack humans. It starts to eat human in the space ship. They try to kill the creature, but the speed of growth and strength of the creature is abnormal, and humans cannot do anything about it. Researchers decided to kill the curate and avoid to bring it to Earth. This is a very terrible movie. This movie ending makes me feel indescribable. Please check it out if you like a horror movie!

LA LA LAND

I watched La La Land at home. This is One of the my favorite movies. The most favorite points of this movie is A lot of awesome songs. Some people say they can't understand characters sing a song  suddenly, but it is the interest point of musical movies. My favorite song is "someone in the crowd". The costumes used in this movie is also wonderful, especially, the costumes they wear when singing this song are really nice. In the musical movies, the songs are expressing their mind and feeling. This is a story a man and a woman's life. There are various opinions about how to end it, but I liked it. I wish that I would be falling in such love, someday.

Jungle Love

I almost laughed out loud at that, but then I met Jennifer's eyes and knew she was feeling just as hurt and disappointed as I was. So I spoke to her over Ian's shoulder. 'I'm going back to the hotel,' I said. 'Are you coming?'
Ian thought I was speaking to him at first.'Well, Lisa,' he started to say, 'you know I'd love to come with you, but...'
'Yes,' Jennifer said behind him, 'I'm coming.' And the sudden horror and panic on Ian's face, as he was realized she was there, almost made up for my disappointment.
This is a kind of love story, but the end of this story is unlike I expected. I didn't like Lisa at first. She is very selfish and she have to be the center of attention. she loves Ian, so she uses any means to get Ian's love. Jennifer is very charming, a ordinary girl who like reading, watching bards and nature. I like her. I wondered that a woman and a man be in love very easily, even after they break heart. Their love story starts suddenly. It’s interesting...

MURDER MAKER

I used to think that murderers were born murderers, but now I know differently. Now I know they can be made.
In my case, it was shock that did it. Four brutal words that changed my life forever. And who spoke those words?
   You.
   Congratulations, you created a murderer.

This quotation is the beginning of this story. I was very surprised when I was reading this sentences. Who is "You"? Is it me or someone else? I couldn't understand at first, but last sentences were told me that this story's main character is a woman and this story is continuing as if she talks her murder story to her ex-husband(= readers). She was an ordinary woman at first, but she became a murder. It is longer story than we use to read, so I worried that I could finish reading. However, I was able to finish reading because this story is very interesting. I was able to image and play the film of this book in my mind. This book's characters were acting in my mind while I was reading. She is murder, absolutely, but she was a hero too in this book. When I read like this book, thriller and the main character is a murder, I cheer up murder's side. I think it is one of a interest point of reading books.

Like a movie

I like watching movie too, and sometimes I think like that "I wanna spend my life like this heroin." or " I wanna get the special power like this hero". However, this book's main character man tries to kill a  rich woman for making money for his marriage by using the same way in a movie which he watched. I can't understand, he tried to kill someone for his desire. I enjoyed the end of this book. I couldn't guess the next situation and last situation. I was very surprised!
